Nowaday we can spend much leisure time owing to the decrease of hours of labor, the increase of income, the elevation of education standards, the change of a standard of values, and so forth. Our leisure time is being continuously increased just before the system of a 5- day working week. For this reason, we need more wel1-furnished and interesting facilities for leisure. But the existing museums are not only recognized as only exhibition hal1s by visitors, but alSO have many lirnitations as cultural facilities for the public. The patterns that the general public visit generally use museums are summarized as tourism, studying, and rest-relaxation. Tourism takes a form of seeing the museum lying near to a tourist resort. Studying puts the principal point to the reproduction of knowledge through the viewing of exhibitions, which is to use museums as social education institutions. Restrelaxation means to visit museums to take a rest except for viewing of exhibitions. When visitors were viewing museums, 1 found out that museums had fol1owing lirnitations : the lack of facilities and the invariability of exhibition contents, the lack of human resources with expert knowledge and independent right of management because of the museum in subordination to government, and museum' s passive atσaction of visitors. Modern museum in Korea, despite its short history, has experienced different changes of its role. Today museums are highlighted as cultural centers for general public which give them entertainment besides the col1ection, preservation, investigation, and display of relics, and an social-educational programs. Therefore, this study is significant in that it illuminates museums as cultural centers for popular leisure and proposes the prornising measures for the future of museums .
