The CIMAM Seoul 2004 became a forum for discussions led by the world 's foremost experts in modem art. I believe that there was special significance in this gathering because both the understanding and the horizons of Asian museums and art systems in the context of the rapid changes in the flow of modem art were greatly increased. The theme of the CIMAM Seoul 2004, "the Shifting Landscape of Contempory Art and Asia" was decided by the organizing committee. Through the three sessions during the conference, the members of CIMAM were able to comprehensively discuss not only the changes in international art, Asian galleries, curatorship as well as global and local problems but also where Asian art stood at that point in time and the similarities and differences between cultures. Furthermore, at the CIMAM Seoul 2004, ongoing issues facing museums such as fund raising, the transformation of the exhibition paradigm, and ethical issues were also raised. In this article, Indonesian, Chinese, Japanese, and Australian cases as well as Korean one were introduced at the conference, so that the meaningful experiences and opinions were shared with the participants from all over the world. Therefore, the CIMAM Seoul 2004 provided significant opportunities to share ideas on modern Korean art and culture with the world, and to strengthen our relationship with the world’s major museums. Within the ICOM 2004 Seoul, CIMAM dealt with both the change in paradigm facing museums, exhibition planning, and curatorship as well as more theoretical topics such as philosophical and moral issues in an effort to delve into what the new directions for modem art are. Such a meaningful outcome of the CIMAM Seoul 2004 should be sustainable elements for the development of the museums of arts and other cultural practices in Korea through CIMAM activities. They are as follows First, Cα，fAM should more actively establish the intemational network between Korean museums and other ones overseas so as to facilitate the collaboration works. Second, CIMAM should play an active role in the professional and acadernic exchanges between museums and other related institutions in Korea. Third, CIMAM should introduce current intemational issues of contemporary art and related institutional policies to the Korean art and museum field. Last but not least, Cα1AM should play a leading role in introducing Asian 따t not only to Korea but also to the world so that it could establish the regional and cultural identity of Asian and Korean art, especially, in a rapidly growing contempory art.
