This article attempts to consider the role and functions of Cungbuk National University Museum and to examine existing problems around that circumstance. In Korea, the national university museum was firstly founded about 60 years ago. Then, there were a lot of improvement in the perspective of both quality and quantities. So it seems that the national university museum has been located at the important position as a part of the local society. A university museum is established for the university community and related to the local society. It has done many things: research , exhibition , education and so on . Above all , a function of research is principal thing by the side of other museums. It conducts various kinds of studying related to the local society. So, it is the heart of the local society studying and will perform more important role of a research institution. Moreover, following with the current of the times , it extended its scope as life-long education institution for both the university community and the local society. As before. the national university museum has the role as essential part of its local society. But there are some problems in the side of politics. Firstly, in operating museum, it has a lot of problem that the government freezes budget and reduces the museum staffs. The national university museum would like to give itself trouble about its activities , but the problems about budget and human resources limit all of activities of the museum. Secondly, the matter of promotion and recruit interfere development of the museum. In Chungbuk National University Museum. there is few promotion and recruit during the past 20 years. It is a common matter in the university museum all. This fact makes worse employer s morale. Lastly. it is too hard to research freely because the university museum is interfered with Cultural Properties Administration too much. Their stiff policies of excavation and research deteriorate activation of the museum. As a result. it seems much better that government relaxes its firm policies for activation of the national university museum.
