Lifelong education is continuing education during lifetime, and it is an effort for maximizing individual self-realization and educational effectiveness with efficiency of school education which targets specific age group and other educational resources in a rapidly changing modern society. Approaching to museum education as lifelong education, it means that the target of museum education is not only all generations but each individuallife stages , thus museum education has something in common with lifelong education such as free and volunteer participation without limitations The ultimate purpose of lifelong education is maintaining and enhancing quality of life, and the reason for emphasizing communities is that communities are actual place of lifelong education. Accordingly, for developing lifelong education, our policies should be focused on communities. There are many kinds of lifelong education such as job education , leisure-hobby education , self-realization education , cultural education and community education, etc. Among them, cultural education plays important role in community cultures because it could develop communities through understanding community culture , self-realization and planning community development with pride of their community. From this point of view, urban history museum which has spread out museum activities in specific city is a medium of cultural education and lifelong education institution as a kind of local museum. Because a primary role of urban history museum is accomplishing cultural. educational and public role through creating residents participational museum. Especially, as a center of revitalization of community lifelong education, urban history museum is important for contributing culture through cultural education. By this research , we could understand cultural education and activities of urban history museum which takes part in local community. First, defining cultural education and local community and looking around importance of cultural education as communities' lifelong education. And based on this , we could make cultural education activities of urban history museum as a lifelong education institution. In research about visitors , we surveyed cultural education activities of Seoul Museum of History which is kind of urban history museum, and on the basis of results of this survey, presented a solution for revitalizing cultural education of urban history museum as a lifelong education institution. urban history museum should plan and manage museum cultural education programs which could concentrate residents interest upon community culture and make an effort to create community museum environment for volunteer participation of residents as lifelong education institution. Nowadays role of urban history museum has changed. Past museum was limited to place of opening and personal uses and only for maintaining and exhibiting data. But now, museum is recognized to public cultural facility for education and lifelong education institution with applying these data. Therefore cultural education activities of urban history museum should reflect meaning of lifelong education institution. In modern societies, core of lifelong education is cultural education, and museum is representing facility for providing qualified cultural arts . Especially urban history museum could serve chance of lifelong education to us from the vicinity.
