칸트는 그의 자연지리학과 실용적 인간학 강의를 통해서 실천이성의 발달을 최상의 수준으로 끌어 올릴 수 있다고 생각하였다. 자연지리학과 실용적 인간학은 세상을 다루는 것일 뿐만 아니라 세상에 사는 인간을 다루는 것이다. 그러한 그의 강의는 그 당시의 학문 체계에 있어서의 결점들을 극복하기 위한 것이었다. 만약 학생들이 그들의 지식을 구체적인 현실에 적용할 방법을 배우지 않는다면 그 지식은 무익한 것이 되고 말 것이다. 칸트는 학생들에게 ‘사상(thoughts)을 배워서는 안되고 생각하는 법(to think)을 배워야 한다’고 강조한다. 자연지리학과 인간학은 학생들에게 부족한 역사적, 사회적 경험을 채워주기 위한 것이었다. 그것은 인간을 단지 사변적 주체로 보는 것이 아니라 경험대상으로서 보고자 한 것이다. 거기에서 인간은 자연적 대상으로서, 외감의 대상으로서, 경험 대상으로서 고려되어야한다. 칸트의 순수이성비판은 이성심리학에 그 무게중심이 있어 보인다. 이성심리학은 경험적 사실이나 실천적 요청을 도외시하는 듯이 보인다. 그러나 실용적 인간학에서는 칸트가 순수이성비판에서 배제한 것들을 배척하지 않는다. 실용적 인간학에서는 내감의 경험적이고 실제적인 길을 추구하고 있다. 인간학은 경험적이고 사실적 영역에로 향하며 영혼의 구체적인 삶을 유추하게 하다. 그것은 실용적 인간학이 경험심리학의 가능성을 열어 놓는 계기를 낳는다. 그리고 경험심리학과의 관계 속에서 설명을 가능하게 한다. 인간의 영혼은 단지 공허한 어떤 것으로 남아 있을 수는 없다. 그것은 모든 가능한 경험적 조건에 의존할 수밖에 없으며, 그러한 조건이 경험심리학의 가능성을 열어 놓는 근거가 된다.
Kant thinks that the practical reason can increase the developmental stage to the highest degree by physical geography and pragmatic anthropology. Physical geography and pragmatic anthropology not only deals with the world but also the human being living in it. Kant's lectures serve to overcome the defects in the system of scholarship of his time. The knowledge would be useless, if students did not learn the methods of concrete application in a problem of the realities of life. Kant emphasizes that students "should not learn 'thoughts', but rather 'to think'." Physical geography and pragmatic anthropology supplements the historical and social experience that students lack. It has come from a point of view that the human being are empirical objects, not speculative subjects. It must be considered that human being are physical objects, empirical objects, and the objects of external sense. It seems that Kant's critique of pure reason has its center of gravity in reasonable psychology. But the pragmatic anthropology does not exclude what the critique of pure reason has excluded. The pragmatic anthropology closely inquires into the empirical and practical aspects of inner sense. The pragmatic anthropology faces the empirical and realistic aspects and inquires into the concrete existence of our souls. It can push open the possibility of empirical psychology. The human soul cannot remain in the emptiness and must be dependent on the possible empirical conditions. These conditions open a possibility of the empirical psychology.
