The dissertation is rooted from an inquiry, questioning the existence of the philosophical evidence on the outbreak of “pragmatism”, considering that “pragmatism” is one of the distinct characteristics regarding tradition of Chinese thought. This is because the tradition itself sees the existing world as where the truth prevails. Phenomenon is considered to be a philosophical characteristic that guides the world we live in to be seen only as the source of the truth. The philosophy of Confucius and Mencius, and Lao-tzu from the Advanced Era was utilized as subjects of analysis while proving the thesis. Confucius and Mencius, and Lao-tzu’s ideas usually originate from their experience. The concept “phenomenon of thought” does not carry the out meaning of inferiority; yet it brings out the conceptualization of modernity. Post-Modern thought tries to get away from the method of relating metaphysical structure of idea to the world. Ever since the start of the modern era, the idea of “conception” became secondary to the more detailed and practical interpretation of phenomenon, as it started to be scrutinized as the truth. Hence typical modern philosophers such as Freud, Karl Marx, Nietzsche, etc… deny rationality, and regard sensitivity, substance or desire to be more fundamental. From this point, you can say that the modernity of Chinese thought was demonstrated from this dissertation.
