국문초록

본 연구에서는 한국아동?청소년패널조사 1∼2차년도 데이터를 사용하여 중학생의 다문화 수용성에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 살펴보았다. 위계적 선형모형(hierarchical linear modeling) 분석을 실시한 결과, 학생들이 친구, 교사, 이웃 등과 친밀한 관계를 유지할수록, 그리고 시 민의식이 발달되어 있을수록 문화적 배경이 다른 사람을 흔쾌하게 받아들일 가능성이 높아 지는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 아울러 학생들의 다문화 수용성을 제고하는 데는 학교에서 운동, 독 서, 문화예술 관련 활동에 참여한 경험이 의미 있는 영향을 미치는 것으로 드러났다. 반면, 국제이해 관련 활동에 참여한 경험은 다문화 수용성에 별다른 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 학교수준에서는 학생들의 학교폭력 피해 경험이 많은 학교일수록 재 학생의 다문화 수용성이 떨어질 개연성이 높은 것으로 판명되었다. 이상의 연구결과는 다문화 수용성을 제고하기 위해서는 학생들이 공동체적 가치관과 민주 시민으로서의 자질을 함양할 수 있도록 다양한 교과외 활동과 체험 기회를 부여하고 문화 전반에 대한 감수성을 키우는 것이 중요함을 시사한다. 이에 따라 연구자들은 학교에서 학 생들에게 스포츠, 독서, 문화예술 관련 활동 등에 참여할 수 있는 기회를 확대할 것을 제안 하고자 한다.

영문초록

Drawing on first-second wave data from Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey, this study examines determinants of multicultural acceptability of middle school students using hierarchical linear modeling(HLM) method. Results show that those students who establish close relationships with peer students, teachers, and neighbors and have a strong sense of civic consciousness tend to exhibit a higher level of multicultural acceptability. In addition, active participation in sports, reading, and culture and art activities in school proves to be conducive to multicultural acceptability. However, it turns out that participation in activities for international understanding have little to do with multicultural attitudes. Finally, those schools plagued with school violence are likely to give rise to a low level of multicultural acceptability among students. These findings implies that fostering communitarian values and democratic citizenship among students by providing them with various extracurricular activities and enhancing their cultural sensitivity is instrumental in instilling in them the appropriate attitudes for living in a multicultural society. As such, it is suggested that students should be given ampler opportunities for participating in sports, reading, and cultural and art activities in school.
