이 질적 연구는 학생들의 성 소수자에 대한 태도와 그러한 태도에 영향을 미치는 요소를 이해함에 목적을 두고 있다. 이 연구를 위해 25명의 대학생들이 참여했으며, 연구자는 면담을 통해 자료를 수집 하고 구성주의적 근거이론(constructivist grounded theory)을 활용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과 성 소수자들에 대한 대학생들의 태도는 다음과 같은 특성을 보였다. 성 소수자에 대한 대학생들의 태 도는 외적 자극과 내적 태도에 영향을 받았다. 성 소수자를 부정적으로 인식하는 학생들은 외적인 자 극(의미 있는 타인들, 사회 보편적 가치, 환경)에 일방적으로 영향을 받는 경우가 높았으며, 성 소수자 에 대해 무관심하거나 그들과의 관계형성을 두려워했다. 하지만 성 소수자를 그대로 받아들이려 하는 대학생들은 외적인 자극(낯섦을 허물기, 문화 환경을 변화시키기)에 일방적으로 영향을 받기 보다는 자아와의 상호관계 속에서 자신의 태도를 발전시키며, 성 소수자에 대해 높은 관심을 보였다. 이 연구 에서 학생들의 성 소수자에 대한 태도는 고정된 것이 아니라 내적갈등과 다양한 경험을 통해 끊임없 이 자신의 태도를 변화시키거나 성 소수자에 대한 가치관을 발전시키고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 연구결 과는 학교 문화의 다양성(cultural diversity)을 위한 교육 프로그램 개발에 기초적 자료로 사용될 수가 있다는 점에 의의가 있다.
This study was designed to investigate and further understand college students' attitudes toward sexual minority persons. 25 college students, all enrolled in public or private universities, participated in semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that some students developed positive attitude toward sexual minority by having more opportunities, such as study aborad, media contact, or discussion. However, other students developed negative attitude toward sexual minority, and were confronted with inner conflict. These students tended to understand sexual minority with the value system in the society, significant others' attitude, or the cultures that they belong to. Findings also indicate that students' attitude toward sexual minority was not fixed, but can be changed and developed based on various experiences including internal challenges. This knowledge can be helpful as a reference for educators and school administrators who are willing to develop successful cultural diversity programs in school.
