교육개혁의 와중에 잉태된 ‘이해찬 1세대’는 많은 교육적, 사회적 함의를 담고 있는 하나의 현상 이었다. 이 ‘세대’의 체험은 지나간 개혁의 노력과 실패, 그리고 우리의 학교교육 실상을 조망할 수 있는 창이다. 교육개혁은 이들을 선봉에 세워 학력과 사회적 지위의 획득수단으로서 웅크린 학교를 외부 세계로 끌어내려 했다. 하지만 완고한 학교현장의 논리와 개혁 이념의 틈바구니에 이들은 끼 여 버렸고, 두 진영의 공방전 끝에 ‘단군 이래 최저 학력’이라는 터진 새우등 같은 상흔을 안게 된 다. 이들의 체험 속에는 섣불렀던 개혁진영의 오류가 적나라하게 배여 있다. 하지만 다른 한편으로 는 변화를 위한 소중한 불씨를 확인할 수 있고, 현장의 개혁은 아직 진행 중이다.
The ‘Min. Lee's 1st Generation’ refers to the students who were in the 9th grade when Minister Lee exaggeratingly proclaimed that they would apply for admissions to colleges without entrance examinations. He intended to set students free from the exhausting preparation for college entrance examinations. However he could not carry out his promise as he told them and the students fell into adversity due to late preparation for the Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test. They underachieved at the test and got a pejorative name of ‘the Min. Lee's 1st Generation.’ This study tried to appraise the reformative efforts of the Korean school system through the eyes of the Generation. The major reformative plans caused ill effects at school scenes and were distorted or modified consequently. The “top-down” reformative ideas could not overcome the deep-rooted “success” ideology of school members and hardly got the spontaneity of them for acting out the programs in daily school life. Even though the original ideals turned out to be “a dream,” the school reformative efforts are now in progress in a steady manner unlike the previous form of “hopping on the bandwagon.”
