The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the level of physical fitness & obesity and
academic achievement among elementary students. Four hundred fifty nine(220 5th graders and 239 6th graders) children were
recruited from S elementary school in J Province. Physical Activity Promotion System(PAPS) data were employed to analyze the
health- and skill- related physical fitness including cardio-respiratory fitness, flexibility, muscular strength & endurance, power,
obesity level, PAPS score and total fitness score, and final examination including Korean language, English language, mathematics,
society, science and total score were analyzed as academic achievement. Among 5th graders, there was statistically significant
correlation between cardio-respiratory fitness, flexibility, power, obesity index, PAPS score and total health score, and Korean
language, English language, mathematics, society, science and total academic score, and among 6th graders, there was statistically
significant correlation between cardio-respiratory fitness, muscular strength & endurance, power, PAPS score and total health
score, and Korean language, English language, mathematics, society, science and total academic score. In addition, among 5th
graders, most fit students were more likely to have higher score in English language, mathematics and total academic score as
compared to least fit students. In conclusion, the physical fitness level performed by regular physical activity participation is
significantly correlated with academic achievement, and the current study suggest habitual physical activity participation for
improving academic performance.
