The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of art therapy plus
un-artistic activities on the verbal self-expression of a child with selective
mutism to women. The subject of this study is an eleven year old fourth
grade elementary school female student with selective mutism. The art
therapy programme was conducted from 9 March 2012 to 13 July 2012, once
a week, for a total of 18 therapy sessions, with each session lasting 50
minutes. In addition, unartistic activities were carried out. The research
instruments were House-Tree-Person(HTP) and Kinetic Family Drawing
(KFD) techniques. To understand the effects of art therapy plus unartistic
activities, a pre-test with post test were conducted and the results were
compared. A content analysis of every session was also conducted. The
results of this study are as follows. First, the art therapy led to an
enhancement in the relation to women of a child with selective mutism.
Second, the art therapy improved the communicational self-expression in a
child with selective mutism. Therefore, I found that the art therapy
supplemented with unartistic activites has an effect that improves verbal
self-expression of a child with selective mutism. However, the effect is
passive. Accordingly, the positive verbal self-expression in a child with
selective mutism remains as an unsolved task. And, this study is a single
case study, so it is limited by generalizations.
