The aim of this article is to reVIew if mam events in Korean modern history
are described in the textbook of Korean history for highschool students to
respect the contribution and sacrifice for the value of protecting homeland,
one of the 3 values in the ideology of reward for patriots and veterans. to
find the problems. and to find a way to solve them. The events in the
textbook of Korean history to analyze in this article are the establishment of
ROK and the 6·25 War which almost destructed the ROK. which are directly
related with the value of protecting homeland in the ideology of reward for
patriots and veterans. Material for research is the 8 kinds of textbook of
Korean history which passed the review by Ministry of Education and
Technology in 2013 and is being used in high schools from Spring Semester.
2014. The foundation of the legitimacy of ROK Government and the reason to
protect ROK in the 6·25 War converge on the issue of democracy and the
theoretical reference to analyze 2 cases is the people's sovereignty and 4
principles of democratic election which IS defined as the minimum democracy
by Sartori. Beetham and Boyle. The 8 textbooks shows that the reason 5·10
General Election led to a separate one only for South Korea is because USSR
refused the entrance of UN Temporary Commission to North Korea but they
missed the main reason of separate election was because North Korean
leadership and USSR worried about the democratic election which wouldn't
guarantee the victory of communist party. The 8 textbooks didn't also
compare the 5·10 General Election with the Election for North Korean
Supreme Council and reveal the undemocratic nature of North Korean election,
and failed to show the legitimacy of ROK Government. The analysis of 8
textbooks shows that they failed to explain the character of the 6·25 War,
what the 6·25 War was to Korean Veterans and Korea people, which is the
most important thing in the section of 6·25 War. The problems with the
textbook of Korean history should be solved soon to reflect the value of
protecting homeland and respect the contribution and sacrifice of Korean War veterans.
