The purpose of this study is to analyze the various symbolism about ‘Orchid'
paintings which is one of the Four Gracious Plants and implicate for art
education. In the general understanding of traditional paintings, there is a
oversimplified analysis of the symbolism, which are gentleman, constancy and
pureness. Considering the contemporary cultural context, the multi-dimensional
study on the various meanings of symbol are very essential. This study attempts
to bring increase attention on the fact that in traditional art more emphasis had
been placed on the various symbolic meanings of Four Gracious Plants Paintings.
This study examines the formation of the background of the Four Gracious
Plants Painting in order to unveil the width and breadth of meanings entailed by
symbol of ‘Orchid' Painting. Focusing on the various symbolism of ‘Orchid'
Painting of Lee, Insang, Im, Heeji and Min, Youngik in Chosun Dynasty, the
meaning of the Four Gracious Plants Painting is further elaborated. Through a
thorough understanding of the various symbol meanings, I suggest a practical
education method that creates various symbolism by the compose of ‘Orchid'
Painting.
This research has the implications for traditional art education that broaden
our understanding of the various symbols about ‘Orchid' paintings included in the
Four Gracious Plants by revisiting its ideological and aesthetic significances in
traditional art.
