대학생들은 부모의 사회계층에 따라 어떻게 다른 대학생활을 경험하고 있는가?: 서울의 한 여자대학교 학생들의 경험을 중심으로

본 연구의 목적은 부모의 사회계층에 따라 학생들이 대학생활을 어떻게 다르게 경험하는 가를 살펴 보는데 있다. 이러한 문제의식은 대학교육의 대중화 이후 대학간 위계에 따른 사 회계층별 차이에 대한 높은 관심에 비해 대학 내 사회계층별 학생경험에 대한 국내연구가 미흡하다는 데서 출발한다. 이를 위해 연구자는 서울 소재 여자대학교 학생 19명을 연구참 여자로 선정하고 부모의 직업지위와 교육에 따른 집단을 구분하여 이들에 대한 심층면담을 2011년 9월부터 2013년 6월까지 수행하였다. 그 결과 참여자들의 수업, 친구관계, 대외활동, 미래계획 등 대학생활 전반에서 학생들은 부모의 사회계층에 따라 차별적인 경험을 하고 있 었다. 부모의 경제적 사회문화적 지원의 차이는 학생의 문화적 경험의 차별화로 나타났고, 이는 학생들의 미래계획에서도 상이한 기대와 태도를 갖도록 하였다.

영문초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the Korean students' different experience of university life according to different social class of family in Korea. Although there are many studies of the relationships between educational opportunity and social class in higher education, the students' different experiences in the university is not received attentions. This study attempts, using qualitative research methods, to explain the differences of university experiences by social class of family. The field of this research's is a women's university in Seoul, and nineteen students are divided by their parent's occupational status and educational level. This research shows that students' experience is differentiated by family background in the respective of English class, relationship of peer group, extracurricular activities and life(career) planning. The researcher discuss participants' experiences through cultural capital theory and sociology of youth.
