정보화 사회에서 수학적 능력이나 정보화 지식이 많이 요구되고 있는 요즈음, 수학이나 컴퓨터 공학에 있어 여학생이 남학생보다 뒤떨어진다는 사회적 인식이 여학생들로 하여금 정보화 능력을 습득하는 데에 큰 장애물 역할을 하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 서울, 경기 지역의 초?중?고등 학생 1,017명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 남녀 학생의 컴퓨터 사용 경험의 정도와 수학과 컴퓨터에 대한 태도에 있어 성별 차이가 존재하는지 알아보고 수학에 대한 태도나 컴퓨터 사용 경험이 성과 컴퓨터에 대한 태도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다. 그 결과 컴퓨터 사용 경험 에 있어 남녀 학생의 유의한 성별 차이를 발견할 수 있었고, 수학에 대한 태도 요인 중에서는 수 학에 대한 자신감에서만 유의한 성별 차이가 있었으며, 컴퓨터에 대한 태도에 있어서는 모든 세부 적인 요인에서 유의한 성별 차이를 발견할 수 있었다. 컴퓨터에 대한 태도에 영향을 미치는 여러 요인들을 경로 분석한 결과, 수학에 대한 태도가 좋을수록, 남학생일수록, 컴퓨터 경험이 많을수록 컴퓨터에 대한 태도가 긍정적임을 알 수 있었고, 성은 컴퓨터 사용 경험을 매개로 하여 컴퓨터에 대한 태도에 간접적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.
Society's perception of women in the field of mathematics is slowly changing, but strong social messages remain that technology, mathematics, and science are nontraditional areas for girls, and girls self-select out of these areas. This study surveys attitudes towards computers and mathematics among 1027 Korea primary and secondary students(518 males and 499 females). There were significant gender differences in respondents' experiences for computers, their confidence in use of computers, and their motivation to use computers. However, there were no statistically significant gender-related differences on mathematics attitudes. Results indicated a positive correlation between mathematics attitudes and computer attitudes. Path analyses demonstrated that a model including gender as a direct effect and mathematics attitudes, computer experiences as indirect effects to computer attitudes was fitted to the data.
