Recognizing the importance of educating international social workers the demand for whom has been rapidly increasing, this paper reviewed the current reality of providing needed university education in this arena and discussed the guidelines issued by the Korean Council on Social Welfare Education and the issues relating to the development of the curriculum for teaching International Social Welfare courses. This paper is mainly about reviewing the existing literature relevant to this topic. Currently, the educational opportunities are provided through graduate level training of international social workers, specialization tracks in undergraduate education, and ad hoc courses offered by NGOs or academic associations. The Korean Council on Social Welfare Education included the International Social Welfare course in the ‘Curriculum Guidelines for Social Welfare Courses’ published in 2012. As an elective course, the demand for the taking course is likely to increase in the future. Although there are three books that are most frequently used as textbooks for the International Social Welfare course, the textbooks that meet the guidelines are not yet available and it is urgent to develop such textbooks that are more appropriate for teaching the course. To firmly establish a newly emerging International Social Welfare course in the existing curriculum structure, all of the educational components including overview, practice, policy, and practicum need to be systematically designed. Also, specific theoretical and practice perspectives need to be developed for covering such issues as global poverty, education for children, youth activities, social development, refugees, child labor, community welfare, and so on.
