This study is sand play case study of working women in their 30s who have trouble dealing with
the role of mother and human relations as they got married and gave birth in the state of
undeveloped inner feminity and maternity due to adverse maternal complex. A total of 48 sessions of
sand play therapy were conducted for 26 months starting in November 2011 as the recovery process
of maternity. We analyzed 29 sand boxes that can be analyzed visually to investigated the inner
consciousness of the subjects in three parts through psychological framework. The first part, from the
1st to 12th session is the stage of a girl. The second part, from 13th to 21th session, is the stage
of converting from a girl to woman through a rite of passage. The final part, from 22th to 48th
session, is the stage of realizing maternity where a woman eventually become a “mother” who is
able to raise a child with maternity through sand therapy that enabled introspection. We draw
some conclusions from the triple-part psychological analysis. First, the study suggested that among
several aspects of ego's function, sand play therapy contributes to interpersonal skills and emotional
development which the subjects lack. It also provide implications on the potential of sand play
therapy as an instrument to deal with maternity complex. Third, the study also offered an example
of negative maternity complex among “the type of maternity of daughter” which is described in
Jung's collected writing(2002).
