학생들에게 입체표현은 공간개념을 이해하고 물성을 놀이형식으로 탐구할 수 있는 중요한 활동이다. 학생들이 사물의 개념을 이해하고 지식을 습득하는 것은 반복과 기억에 의한 학습보다는 놀이적인 요소를 통해서 이루어질 때 효과적이다(Strosberg, 2002: 31). 그러나 입체표현이 놀이의 형식을 취한다고해도, 입체표현은 학생들이 내적인 이미지를 평면에서 공간으로 전환하는 복잡한 사고 과정에 의하며 물성을 이해해야 가능한 활동이므로 단순한 활동은 아니다. 미술교육에서 입체표현은 필요한 재료와 용구의 기능을 이해하고 공간과의 관계를 고려하여 평면표현과는 다른 영역을 습득해 나갈 수 있는 중요한 활동이라 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 입체표현의 교육적 의의를 살리기 위해서는 학생들이 입체를 성공적으로 표현해가는 과정의 경험을 통한 입체표현 교육이 이루어져야 한다. 입체는 평면과는 달리 공간을 점유하는 것이므로 공간과의 관계를 이해할 수 있도록 학생들 스스로 창작을 통해 입체표현의 특성을 이해해야만 하는데, 이 과정을 단계적으로 접근했을 때 교육적 효과를 살리는 하나의 수업 방안이 될 수 있다. 이것은 평면표현에서도 마찬가지고 중요하게 고려되어야할 요소이다.
