about mothering and marriage-labor immigrant families in the Korean context. To examine disparities and contradictions that emerged from my multiple ethnographic interviews with Minh between 2013 and 2015, I use Bakhtin’s idea of heteroglossia as an analytic tool. The paper concludes by discussing the need for establishing renewed perspectives on the role of “Koreanness,” the complexities of marriage-labor immigrants’ lifeworlds, and mothering as cultural, emotional, and affective labor. -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.1 1 1-19 (19 pages)
50 Chinese mothers of preschool children and five early childhood teachers through a synchronous online text chat. In the process of consulting the early childhood teachers, the parents expressed many concerns, questions and views of childrearing and early childhood education, thereby providing evidence about their thinking and behaviour. Drawing on the concept of ‘disposition’, the study provides insights into the common thinking threads that characterized Chinese parenting and the ways those... -
Number-Fact Knowledge and Mathematical Problem-solving of 5- to 7-year-olds
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages

and linguistic backgrounds. After a series of focused lessons, children’s knowledge of number facts, including single-digit addition, subtraction, and doubles improved substantially. However, children did not always apply this knowledge to relevant problem-solving situations. The difficulty level for recalling number facts was not directly related to the magnitude of the numbers, with certain salient facts such as 5+5 and 10+10 learned earlier than facts with smaller sums such as 2+3 and 1+4. -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 33 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2013, Vol.7 No.3 4 69-101 (33 pages)
This study examined how pre- and post-service early childhood teachers’ beliefs and responses to bullying among young children differ by level of qualification, type of bullying and whether or not it was witnessed. Results showed 1st and 4th-year student- and diploma-qualified teachers perceived acts of physical bullying to be more serious than verbal or relational bullying to a greater extent than did degree-qualified teachers. Degree-qualified teachers were less susceptible to bullying type... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages

for a total of 180 hours, and the 12 Chinese teachers were surveyed and interviewed about the beliefs underpinning their teaching of literacy. A similar pattern of Chinese literacy pedagogy was shared by L1 and L2 classrooms, with whole class direct instruction/interaction being the dominant mode. A belief-practice gap was found: Although the teachers believed in balanced approaches to teaching Chinese literacy, they predominantly engaged in traditional, instructional practice. In L2 Singapore... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2011, Vol.5 No.2 2 27-48 (22 pages)
A sample of 466 mothers of preschoolers completed a questionnaire identifying their home teaching practices and assessing their attitudes towards teaching EFL. Results indicated a positive trend towards home EFL teaching, with teaching mothers tending to be aged between 30-39 years, more highly educated and more confident about their own English abilities than those who were not teaching. The findings raise significant issues that can inform EFL teaching policy and practice during the early... -
