Flexural properties, interlaminar shear strength and morphology of phenolic matrix composites reinforced with xGnP-coated carbon fibers
Jong Kyoo Park, Jae Yeol Lee, Lawrence T. Drzal, Donghwan Cho 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.17 No.1 5 33-38 (6 pages)
of the xGnP-coated carbon fiber/phenolic matrix composites were found to be higher than those of the uncoated composite. The flexural and interlaminar shear strengths were affected by the particle size of the xGnP, while the particle size had no significant effect on the flexural modulus. It seems that the interfacial contacts between the xGnP-coated carbon fibers and the phenolic matrix play a role in enhancing the flexural strength as well as the interlaminar shear strength of the composites. -
Effect of stacking sequence on the flexural and fracture properties of carbon/basalt/epoxy hybrid composites

composites and carbon skin-basalt core (CSBC) composites. Fracture tests were conducted and the fracture surfaces of the carbon/basalt/epoxy hybrid composites were then examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the flexural strength and flexural modulus of the CSBC specimen respectively were ~32% and ~245% greater than those of the BSCC specimen. However, the interlaminar fracture toughness of the CSBC specimen was ~10% smaller than that of the BSCC specimen. SEM... -
Effect of chemically reduced graphene oxide on epoxy nanocomposites for flexural behaviors
Seul-Yi Lee, Mi-Hwa Chong, Mira Park, Hak-Yong Kim, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages

the mechanical properties of the epoxy nanocomposites. It was found that the presence of RGO improved both flexural strength and modulus of the epoxy nanocomposites till the RGO loading reached 0.4 wt%, and then decreased. The optimum loading achieved about 24.5 and 25.7% improvements, respectively, compared to the neat-epoxy composites. The observed mechanical reinforcement might be an enhancement of mechanical interlocking between the epoxy matrix and RGO due to the unique planar structures. -
Mechanical and electrical properties of epoxy resin/epoxidized castor oil/carbon fiber cloth composites
Fan-Long Jin, Heng Zhang, Shan-Shan Yao, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.22 12 105-109 (5 pages)
Carbon fibers (CFs) have a unique combination of outstanding mechanical, physical, and chemical properties and are among the materials most frequently used in the preparation of a large variety of composites [1-5]. CF-reinforced polymer composites have been widely used in many advanced technological fields, such as aerospace, engineering, sporting goods, automobiles, and marine industry during the past few decades due to their excellent properties, including high strength-to-weight ratios, light... -
Effects of coal tar pitch addition on the wear behavior of carbon/carbon composites
Young Chan Jung, Duk Soo Kang, Kyong Yop Rhee, Soo Jin Park, David Hui 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 4 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 9 62-65 (4 pages)
Carbon/carbon (C/C) composites are acknowledged as high performance materials because of their good mechanical properties such as wear resistance, even at the higher temperature, due to their low thermal expansion [1-5]. Their hardness and light weight in addition to their superior mechanical properties at high temperature make C/C composites the best material to make brakes for aircrafts and other high weight vehicles. Accordingly, a number of studies have been conducted on the performance of... -
Phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide, exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets, and the composites: an overview
Donghwan Cho, Lawrence T. Drzal 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 11 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 1 1-11 (11 pages)
The dynamic mechanical and thermal properties and the electrical resistivity of xGnP/PETI-5 composites are characterized. The effect of liquid rubber amine-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (ATBN)-coated xGnP particles incorporated into epoxy resin on the toughness of xGnP/epoxy composites is examined in terms of its impact on Izod strength. This paper provides an extensive overview from fundamental studies on PETI-5 and xGnP, as well as applied studies on relevant composite materials.
