본 연구는 한국교육개발원의 한국교육종단조사 6차 및 8차년도 자료를 활용하여 고등학교 선택중 심 교육과정에서 학생들의 과목 선택 이유에 따른 집단별 특성을 파악하고, 과목 선택 이유가 졸업 후 대학에서의 학업에 미치는 영향을 분석하고 있다. 6차년도와 8차년도 설문에 모두 참여한 2,251명 의 자료가 최종 분석에 사용되었으며 고등학교 3학년의 과목 선택 이유에 따라 학생의 수업이해도와 학업 및 진학에 대한 인식에 차이가 있는지를 분석하기 위한 다변량 분산분석(MANOVA)과 대학 진 학 후 학업활동에 미치는 영향력을 확인하기 위한 중다회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과 약 40%의 학생들이 적성 및 관심 분야보다는 내신이나 수능 또는 공부 부담에 의해 과 목 선택을 하였으며, 과목 선택 이유에 따라 학생의 수업이해도, 학업적 자기 개념, 입시 부담감, 그리 고 진학 목적에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 고등학교에서의 과목 선택은 졸업 후 대학에서의 수업참여와 전공몰입에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되었다. 고등학교 3학년 때 적 성 및 관심 분야와 관련되어 과목을 선택한 학생들이 내신 및 수능에 유리한 과목을 선택한 학생들보 다 대학 수업에 더 적극적으로 참여하며 전공몰입이 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으 로 본 연구는 고등학교 선택 교육과정을 다양화하는 한편, 학생들이 본인의 적성과 관심을 고려하여 선택 과목을 결정할 수 있도록 안내할 필요가 있다는 점을 제안하고 있다.
Making use of data collected through the Korean Educational Longitudinal Study (KELS), this study examines differences in reasons underlying students’ choice of elective courses in high school and its impact on their academic performances in college. It analyses survey data collected in the 6th year(2010) and the 8th year(2012) of the KELS, in which 2,251 students participated. In the 6th year, the participating students were high school seniors; in the 8th year, they were either freshmen or sophomores in college. Major findings demonstrate that more than 40% of students chose a course not because they were interested in it but because the course was easy or gave them benefits in college admission. It also turned out that reasons for choosing elective courses affected students’ academic performances in college. Students who considered interests and future careers in selecting courses showed a higher level of participation and involvement in college majors than other groups of students. Based on these findings, this study recommends that high schools help students consider their interests and careers in choosing elective courses, while providing more diverse elective courses.
