The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of smart-stuffed animal toy on their storytelling
of ‘dog’ in a class of five-year-olds. This study includes 26, 5-year-olds from a private kindergarten
located in Seoul, Korea. In order to identify children’s storytelling of ‘dog’, drawn pictures by children
and interviews were commenced twice, before and after children played with the smart toy, ‘Biscuit’
for 3minutes, eight times over a 4-week period. The collected data was categorized by content,
frequency output, semantic analysis, and analyzed. The children's drawings of ‘dog’ and interview were
analyzed based on such as narrative structure(persona, empathy, analogy, plot, experience, time factor),
character, temporal background, and spatial background. The frequently appeared narrative types found
in storytelling in pre-drawings are empathy and analogy in the past time and real space. Whereas in
case of post-drawings, the plot type narrative frequently found in storytelling and empathy type
appeared newly in the uncertain time and space. The result showed The interactive play between
kindergartners and dog-type smart expanded children’s storytelling of ‘dog’ and promoted their
empathy of ‘dog’. This research will be useful in understanding children’s play with smart-stuffed
animal toy and provide valuable educational implication for parents and teachers purchasing smart toys.
