This paper was undertaken to provide an overview on the meaning and characteristics of grandparenthood and grandparenting. Due to extended life expectancy, Koreans now have a longer period of grandparenthood which makes it more important for successful aging. Previous studies on grandparents in Korea have been mostly focused on grandmothers who take care of their grandchildren on behalf of their grown-up, working children. In this study, however, a broader spectrum of literature on grandparenthood was reviewed to present more diverse images of grandparents. The “memory box” approach, which is intended to encourage grandchildren to understand and connect to their grandparents, was discussed. Finally, a call was made to develop new adult education programs for grandparents.
