This study aimed to empirically analyze the moderating effects of disability acceptance on the life satisfaction
of persons with physical disabilities. For this study, the data of 2,216 persons with physical disabilities were
analyzed from the raw data of the 4th Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled(2011) by the Employment
Development Institute of Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled. Multiple regression analysis was
conducted for the test of the main effects of independent variables and moderating effect analysis by Aiken
and West, which is based on the hierarchical regression analysis, was conducted for the test of mediating
effect. The results of this study are as follows. First, when the health condition of persons with physical
disabilities are better, when their subjective socioeconomic status is higher, when they can live more
independently without the other's assistance, when they have a religion, a spouse, earned income and higher
educational background and when they are male, their life satisfaction tended to be higher. Second, as their
life satisfaction tended to be higher when the degree of disability acceptance of persons with physical
disabilities is higher, the main effect of disability acceptance has been verified. Third, as for the moderating
effect of disability acceptance, while the life satisfaction of the group with the high degree of disability
acceptance tended to gradually decrease when they need more assistance, that of the group with the low
degree of disability acceptance tended to increase when they need more assistance and such increase was
relatively greater than the decrease of life satisfaction of the group with the high degree of disability acceptance.
It, therefore, was found that the degree of disability acceptance was moderating the effect of the degree
of the necessity of other's assistance in daily life on the life satisfaction of persons with physical disabilities.
Based on the abovementioned results, the suggestions to improve the life satisfaction of persons with physical
disabilities were made in the aspects of social welfare policy and practice.
