Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)을 학습 자료의 하나로 사용하는 고등교육의 교수자가 늘 어날 것으로 예상됨에 따라, 효과적 교수전략 설계를 위해 MOOC에서의 대학생들의 동기와 학습패 턴을 이해하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 자기결정성이론을 근간으로, MOOC 수강 시 대학생들의 동기와 학습패턴을 분석하였다. 사례연구방법을 적용하여, MOOC 강의에 참여한 총 25명의 학생들을 내사된 조절 유형과 동일시된 조절 유형의 두 가지 동기유형으로 나눌 수 있었다. 내사된 조절 유형은 외부적 원인인 수료증(Certificate)과 정규수업에서의 좋은 성적을 받기 위해 MOOC을 수강하는 경향이 있었고, 교수자에게 정규수업 내에서의 구조화된 도움을 기대하였다. 반 면, 동일시된 조절 유형은 MOOC 수강을 새로움과 배움의 기회로 여기는 경향이 있었으며, 개인의 발전을 위해 지속적으로 MOOC을 수강 할 것이라고 보고하였다. 이러한 학습자들의 동기와 학습패 턴 분석 결과를 토대로, 정규수업에 MOOC을 활용하려는 교수자를 위한 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문초록

As increasing number of instructors in higher education integrate massive open online courses (MOOCs) into their course materials, understanding college students’ motivation and learning patterns in a MOOC becomes an important element in designing effective teaching and teaching strategies. Using self-determination theory (SDT) as a theoretical framework, we sought to examine college students’ motivation and learning patterns in a MOOC. By using a case study approach, 25 college students’ motivation was explained with two types of distinctive motivation: introjected regulation and identified regulation. Introjected regulators tended to participate in a MOOC because of external rewards, such as a certificate or a good grade in a college class, and wanted the course instructor’s structured support in a regular college classroom. By contrast identified regulators exhibited a sense of curiosity about a new experience with a MOOC and reported further use of MOOCs for personal development. Discussion and suggestions are included for college instructors who intend to integrate a MOOC into their regular college classroom.
