This study examined the effects of Satir experiential family art therapy on the emotional expression
and the communication in a family. The subjects of the study were a family of four, composed of elderly
parents and two premarital adult children who sought counseling at the S Psychology Counseling Center in
A city. The researcher conducted a Satir experiential family art therapy session, once a week, for 60-90
minutes per session, from August 2014 to March 2015, for a total of 25 sessions. To verify the effects of the
therapy, data were collected through the Ambivalence over Emotion Expression Questionnaire(AEQ-K) and
the Satir communication type scale(SCTS) in pre-and post-test. Also, to investigate the emotional expression,
communication, and behavior change process, this research conducted qualitative analysis of each session.
The results of this study indicate that Satir experiential family art therapy has a positive effect on the
emotional expression and the communication within a family comprised of elderly parents and -premarital
adult children. Based on these results, this research has significance in suggesting the effectiveness of Satir
experiential family art therapy. The results may also find applicability in the psychotherapy field and
empirical case research if the study is to be repeated with a larger sample.
