This study intends to explore methods to utilize Havruta learning for social studies class to stimulate
the interaction of students with questions and to stimulate their intelligence, character, and emotions. To
that end, various Havruta learning methods were used to design and conduct a social studies class
through a field research in this study. Havruta is an educational practice that leads students to ask
questions in pairs and to develop discussions and debates. It allows students to expand their thinking and
to develop their abilities to engage in discussions. The Havruta-based social studies class led to positive
interactions of students and significant changes in their intelligence, character, and emotions. The present
study shed light on the following. First, a range of Havruta-based social studies programs developed and
applied here indicated the applicability of the Havruta learning method to the field. Second, the
Havruta-based social studies class was conducive to significant changes in positive interactions and in
intelligence, personality and emotion among students. These findings have the following implications. First,
competent human resources need be secured to implement substantive Havruta-based social studies
programs. Second, constant studies on developing and applying Havruta-based social studies programs fit
for the Havruta learning method are needed. Third, schools at each level need to organize Havruta-related
support groups to freely share outcomes, which will contribute to the development and application of
better programs. This exploratory study could pave the way for applying Havruta learning methods to
social studies class in the future.
