Design, construction and operation of 100 kg/hr pilot scale pyrolysis and smelting system
have been made with objective of studying the possibility of commercialization. It has been
known that solid wastes that have the calorific value more than 3,000 kcal/kg can be easily
smelted and vitrified in this system. The leaching concentrations of considered heavy metals of
smelted and vitrified slags are less than 10% of the upper limit of Korean environmental
standard. Analyzed concentrations of dioxin in exhaust gas are 5.7 ng-Teq/Nm³ for polymeric
wastes, and 11.7 ng-Teq/Nm³ for municipal wastes, respectively . These results may show that
there exists a bound of reducing the residual concentration of dioxin by using only the high
temperature smelting in this small pilot scale system. Nevertheless, the hazardous fly ash and
bottom ash can be converted to usable raw materials by the thermal treatment of pyrolysis and
smelting.
