본 연구는 임진왜란 최초의 陸地戰 승리인 영천복성전투를 다룬다. 영 천복성전투의 승리에 원동력은 관군이 아닌 의병에 의해서였다. 그들은 정규 군인이 아님에도 불구하고 죽음을 불사하여 외적인 열세를 극복 전 투를 승리로 이끌었다. 그들의 승리는 유학이라 사상적 배경이 있었기에 가능했다. 이것은 비단 영천뿐만 아니라 임진왜란 당시 창의의병 모두가 공통적으로 지닌 배경으로 볼 수 있다. 창의의병은 유학의 忠과 義를 실 천하기 위해 살신성인의 태도로 전장에 뛰어든 자들이다. 다만 이 과정 에서 유학의 덕목인 孝와 忠사이에서 적잖은 갈등이 발생했던 것으로 보 인다. 왜냐하면 의병으로 전쟁이 참여한다는 것은 죽음을 불사하는 것이 며 이는 자칫 부모를 봉양하고 조상의 대를 이어야하는 儒者의 덕목을 이행하지 못하는 결과를 낳을 수도 있기 때문이다. 이런 갈등은 영천 창 의의병들에게서도 나타났던 것으로 보인다. 다행이도 그들은 이 문제를 적절하게 해결 할 수 있었기 때문에 적극적으로 의병활동에 참여할 수 있었던 것으로 보인다. 이들 문제가 해결된 의병들에 있어 죽음은 문제 가 되지 않았다. 왜냐하면 義의 실천을 위한 죽음은 끝이 아닌 영원히 기억되는 不朽로 이어지기 때문이다. 특히 영천지역은 살신성인과 불후 의 상징인 정몽주를 祭享하는 臨皐書院이 있는 곳이기 때문에 그 정신이 더욱 강했던 것으로 보인다. 왜냐하면 창의의병의 대부분이 임고서원과 직간접적으로 영향을 맺은 집안에서 비롯되었기 때문이다. 이런 사실을 미루어 볼 때 영천복성전투의 승리에 사상적 기반과 원동력은 외적요소 가 아닌 내적요소에 있음을 짐작할 수 있다.
