본 연구의 목적은 대학 소재지에 따라 공학계열 학생들의 학습참여가 차이가 있는지를 탐색하고, 이러한 관계가 학생의 특성(성별, 학년, 고교성적, 가계소득)에 따라 다른 양상으로 나타나는지를 실증 적으로 분석하는데 있다. 학습참여는 학생이 높은 학업성과와 성공적인 대학 생활을 위해 시간과 노 력을 투자하고, 학습 동기를 가지며, 학습 활동에 도움이 되는 행동을 하는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구에 서 학습참여는 4개 영역 10개 요인으로 나누어 살펴보았다: 학업적 도전(고차원 학습경험, 반성적․통 합적 학습경험, 학습전략), 교우와 학습(능동적․협동적 학습태도, 다양한 그룹과 토론경험), 교수와 경 험(교수-학생 상호작용, 효과적인 교수), 대학 환경(교우와 관계, 교직원과 관계, 지원적 대학 환경). 미국 NSSE(National Survey of Student Engagement) 진단 도구를 한국 대학의 맥락에 맞게 수정․ 보완한 한국형 학습참여 진단도구(K-NSSE)를 활용하였다. 국내 81개 4년제 대학 9,417명을 대상으로 t-test를 통해 집단(성별, 학년별) 간 비교 분석을 수행하였으며, 개인과 대학 수준을 포함한 자료 구 조를 고려하여 다층모형 분석을 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 지방대학 공학계열 학생들은 수도권 대학 집 단과 비교하여 교수-학생 상호작용은 높은 반면, 다양한 집단과의 토론 경험은 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 학습참여에 대한 대학 소재지의 영향은 학생의 특성(성별, 학년 및 가계소득수준)에 따라 차이 가 있었다. 여학생 집단에서 능동적․협동적 학습경험에 대한 지방대학의 효과가 보다 크게 나타난 반면, 효과적인 교수활동에 대한 지방대학의 영향은 고학년일수록 줄어들었고, 지원적 대학 환경에 대 한 지방대학의 영향이 고소득층 학생일수록 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 학업 성과에 영향 을 미치는 학습참여를 증진시키기 위해서 대학 소재지별, 학생 특성별로 맞춤형 교육 프로그램을 개 발하고 관련 제도를 개선할 필요가 있음을 제언하였다.
The purpose of this study is to analyze how the location of universities influences engineering students’ engagement and to what extent the impact of university location differs by a student’s characteristics in student engagement. Student engagement consists of four themes and 10 indicators: academic challenge (higher-order learning, reflective and integrative learning, and learning strategies), learning with peers (collaborative learning and discussion with diverse others), experiences with faculty (student-faculty interaction and effective teaching practices), and campus environment (relationship with peers, relationship with faculty and staff, and supportive environment). Utilizing survey data collected from 9,417 engineering students at 81 universities, this study employs descriptive statistics, t-test, and multilevel model analysis. The findings indicate that whereas engineering students in local universities are more likely to be involved in student-faculty interaction compared to their counterparts in the metropolitan area, they are less likely to be involved in discussion with diverse others. The results further reveal distinctly different patterns regarding the relationship between the location of universities and student engagement by a student’s characteristics. This study suggests that in order to improve the level of student engagement that is associated with a student’s academic and social achievement, a different approach is needed considering different university locations and a student’s characteristics.
