The purpose of this paper was to offer insights and suggestions to forster policy and
system efforts to expand the role of self-determination in the lives of people with
disabilities.
For that purpose, the author reviewed the concepts of self-determination, and their
applications for individuals with developmental disabilities through literature in this area.
In addition, self-determination programs for individuals that were developed in South
Korea and the United States were reviewed. Based on the literature, the following
suggestions can be provided. First, it is imperative to develop self-termination programs
that are relevant to Korean culture. Second, legal and systemic support is necessary to
enable individuals with developmental disabilities to live with autonomy in the life cycle
transitions. Third, the multidisciplinary approach that goes beyond the scope of specialized
programs needs to be incorporated in this area. Finally, changing social attitudes toward
developmental disabilities is crucial.
