본 연구는 초등학교 저학년 대상 문화 주제 중심 영어 교수 프로그램을 개발하여 학생들의 영어 능력, 문화 이해도, 동기와 태도 등의 정의적 영역에 미치는 효과를 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 경기도 한 초등학교의 2학년 한 학급 26명 학생들을 대상으로 연구가 실시되었다. 개 발된 프로그램은 인사말, 의생활, 식생활, 주생활, 그리고 생활용품의 다섯 가지 주제로 구성되어 있다. 이들 주제는 2학년 교과과정과 EBSe에서 추출하였다. 프로그램의 효과를 알아보기 위하여 인지적ž정의적 영역을 묻는 설문지를 통하여 양적 자료를, 학습일지를 통해서는 질적 자료를 수집 하였다. 자료 분석 결과, 주제 중심 문화 영어 교수 프로그램은 학생들의 영어능력과 문화 이해 능 력에 긍정적 영향을 미쳤으며, 영어 학습 집중력과 학습 동기를 향상시킨 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 초등영어교육을 위한 몇 가지 시사점과 제안을 제시하였다.
This study investigates the effects of a theme-based culture and English teaching program for enhancing elementary school lower graders' English communication ability, cultural understanding, and affective domains such as motivation and attitudes. The study was carried out in a second-grade class of 26 students in a city of Gyeonggi-do. The program consists of 5 cultural themes: greetings of the world, clothing of the world, foods of the world, houses in the world, and dairy products in the world. These themes are based on the second grade curriculum and EBSe programs. To find out the effects of the program, cognitive and affective questionnaires were developed for the quantitative analysis and students’ learning logs were also employed for the qualitative analysis. Findings from the results are as follows: firstly, the theme-based culture and English teaching program had positive effects on students' English proficiency and cultural understanding ability. It was also revealed that the learners' concentration and learning motivation in the class increased through the program. Based on the results of this study, a few implications and suggestions for teaching English to elementary school students are provided.
