Feelings of love and respect are an essential condition for the happiness of our lives. However, sometimes we do love without respecting, and sometimes respect without loving. Sometimes we choose respect owing to a pain caused by loving, and sometimes we choose love owing to insufficiency only with loving. But we can’t live in any one of them. So we are trying to fit together in love and respect. But if love is primarily based on the aesthetic emotion, respect is based on the moral feeling. Kant proceeds from the aesthetic emotion to the moral feeling, hence goes towards respect from love. Of course, he claims the practical love beyond the egoistic love for the completion of respect, and also emphasizes the moral friendship to harmonize love and respect. But Hegel thinks that Kant’s plan to attempt the compatibility of love and respect is not successful. As Hegel tries to synthesize dialectically the Enlightenment and Romanticism, he also tries to criticize and overcome the limits of Kant’s position about love and respect. He thinks that Kant’s autonomy has a limit owing to basing on more respect than love. He tries to overcome it through the dialectic movement between love and respect, and proceed towards solidarity. Today we need the Hegelian perspective in order to solve the problems of the isolated egos caused by the libertarian vision. However, if we strengthen the Hegelian perspective too much, the merit of Kant’s respect supporting autonomy can be in crisis. Therefore, Kant’s autonomy and Hegel’s solidarity must be newly synthesized.
