This study aims to examine the relationship between art appreciation and
appreciator’s individual characteristics. Firstly, psychological research on individual
differences in art appreciation was reviewed. Based on literature review, the survey
was conducted to assess the aspects of art appreciation, personality, value of life
and artistic resources. Results from regression analyses showed that all three
factors of personality, value of life and artistic resources significantly predicted art
appreciation. Personality variables were the most influential predictors for those
who appreciate art cognitively. Appreciators who were higher in openness to
experience, lower in emotional stability, rated intellectual and aesthetic values
higher but economic value lower, and had more art knowledge and current cultural
capital preferred cognitive appreciation. On the other hand, artistic resources
variables were the strongest predictors for those who appreciate art emotionally.
Appreciators who were also higher in openness to experience, lower in emotional
stability, rated religious and aesthetic values higher, and had more art knowledge
and current cultural capital preferred emotional appreciation. Lastly, implication for
future research and application to art education and the limitation of the study
were discussed.
