The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of
psycho-educational approach in music therapy on improving self-expression
and communication skills of adolescents with cerebral palsy. The participant
was a 17 year old adolescent at J rehabilitation clinic in Seoul, Korea, and a
total of 30 weekly half-hour sessions were observed from August, 2014 to
March, 2015. Quantitative differentials were measured using Self-expression
Rating Scale and Holden Communication Scales (a measurement tool of
communication skills) before and after the entire program, and qualitative
differentials were measured using narrative description after each session.
The outcome of the study is as follow: psycho-educational approach has
positive influence on (a) improving self-expression and communication skills;
and (b) promoting participation and extension of musical repertoire on
adolescents with cerebral palsy. Therefore, researchers conclude that
psycho-educational approach in music therapy is effective in enhancing
self-expression and communication skills on adolescents with cerebral palsy,
especially on those who suffers from low motivation and psychological
cowardice.
