It is commonly thought that physically severe disabled women are among those who experience mothering: pregnancy, child-birth, and nurturing. More than 80% of them, however, are treated as inadequate for mothering or, what is worse, unsexed entity. This work engendered by this biased opinion is a qualitative study of the meaning and nature of maternal experience of severe physically disabled women. This study has been performed by means of Van Manen's phenomenological method. Five severe handicapped women were deeply interviewed to listen to their mothering experience which they underwent under the family uneasy-going context(recipient of basic living, both husband and wife disabled, and a single parent family). To sum up, the pregnancy experience of severe physical handicapped ladies can be represented as “a sense of wonder of life following utmost suffering” and their childbirth experience as “a reversal of life done on the threshold of death”. In addition, their nurturing experience can be articulated as “overcoming obstacles with child”.
