Internationalization and information-oriented age are the main characteristics of modern society. Nowadays,
certain ways of the cramming method of teaching cannot guarantee our students to orient themselves in the
flood of information and knowledge. Modern society requires our children to develop their ability to adapt
certain information and knowledge as needed, which is also required in various fields of art education. Therefore,
in the flow of art education, self-directed learning method has been attracting our attention to raise our
students’ ability to solve their problem regarding how to accommodate information more effectively. In my
study, I focus on the true meaning of self-directed learning method in art by presenting various ways of how
we can make students understand the meaning of traditional Korean patterns. First of all, I examine the true
meaning of self-directed learning method. Secondly, I present the result of my research of the categories of
traditional Korean patterns. Thirdly, I present certain adaptable educational programs of traditional Korean
patterns based on self-directed learning method. The main expected effects through those programs are as
follows. Firstly, the learner can participate in the programs actively with the consciousness of master based on
self-directed learning method. Secondly, the learner can cooperate with the teacher and other learners when faced
with difficulties. Lastly, students can understand the true meaning of traditional Korean art and adapt it in
their own modern way under certain subjects related to our daily lives. In the process of experimenting with
their ways of expression, they certainly had a great time, understanding traditional Korean art and culture,
respecting other participants’ perspective. I expect that those programs can make them know about the beauty
of traditional Korean art and feel proud of it through the process of self-directed learning method.
