The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of situation-based English cartoon drawing
activities on elementary English learners’ writing ability and creativity. For this purpose, 28
students in 6th grade participated in the study during the course of their regular English lessons
for 15 weeks. The students engaged in activities such as setting situations, creating dialogues and
completing cartoons. The results of the study were as follows. First, situation-based English
cartoon drawing activities had a positive influence on elementary English learners’ writing ability.
Creating contexts for using target expressions and writing dialogues seemed to contribute to
long-term memory of English expressions. Second, in the affective domain, situation-based English
cartoon drawing activities were effective in increasing the students’ interest and participation in
English writing. Third, in the creativity domain, situation-based English cartoon drawing activities
enhanced the students’ creativity, especially divergent thinking and problem solving ability. Fluency
and flexibility out of divergent thinking were much improved. Based on these results, suggestions
for further studies are provided.
