This study aims to find out the significance and function of performance in dramatherapy. Firstly, the research examines the therapeutic aspects of performance through the experiences of two main subjects of performance – actors and audiences. For audiences, performance functions not only as the power of self-healing, but also catharsis through emotional and cognitive experiences based on empathy and distanciation. For actors, the experience on the stage itself provides opportunities to regain self-confidence and supportive feelings. In addition, the actualisation of the needs of representation and transformation provides a sense of unity between body and soul; and this experience eventually helps actors to discover their true selves. Secondly, this research discusses the therapeutic effects of performance in two different theatre settings: performance in an ordinary theatre and in a therapeutic play for therapeutic process. In order to provide an in-depth explanation of the structure and function of the therapeutic play, the sample for the therapeutic work was directed by the researcher. The finding illustrates that the production process and experiences of the audiences show some notable differences, although there is no significant difference between two settings in terms of performances. Finally, the research also divides the movements and actions of the performance in the therapeutic work, based on the spontaneous aspects of role playing and monodrama. Role playing shows identification, projection and transition; whereas, monodrama is mostly concerned with projection. In conclusion, this study argues the significance of the format of performance in dramatherapy; and the needs to present more healing-focused performances for the public.
