The purpose of this research is to give careful consideration to the healing artworks of The Bread and Puppet Theater, which, up to now since its establishment in New York in 1963, refuses to be subordinated to the American cultural industry and the academism of academic circles and has been producing and performing 'popular' puppet plays in the form of primitive composite arts in autonomous and independent ways through the people's collaboration system. The healing characteristics of the theater work will be divided into the following six categories : 'Real play', 'Poor theater', 'Humble director', 'Unrepresentative puppetry', 'Religious ritual', 'Carnival'. Through this, it will be emphasized that the theater work can be very important not only for the artistic dimension, but also for self-training and healing life for more free and healthy life. At present, Korea is getting more and more active efforts of Artists and Drama therapists for anxiety about healing, restoration of humanity and community society. At this point, the review of the healing characteristics of the theater work of Bread and Puppet Theater is expected to provide us with some vision and inspiration for healing theater work, experience, and performance.
