The aim of the present study is to take a look into the otherworld and
the way in which the characters are given shape to in
Heogungaegibonpuri. In this study, three key points are presented.
The main theme of Heogungaegibonpuri, the severance of relations
between this life and the otherworld, is disclosed by the neighborhood
grandmother who acts as a supporting character. In order to give aid to
the children, the neighborhood grandmother allows Heogungaegi to
remain in this life, which, however, causes the separation between the
mother and children as a result. Furthermore, it becomes the cause of
the severance of relations between this life and the otherworld. The good
intentions which the neighborhood grandmother has is her primary
characteristic and the concept of the otherworld comes into sight by
unintended consequences of her goodwill.
The neighborhood grandmother is considered as an evil with goodwill
as well as a good person with malice. Her contradictory characteristics
can lead to the clue on the meaning of the otherworld in Korean
shamanism. In narrative songs, the otherworld is a prohibited location
for ordinary people, however, it also is a place to communicate with the
help of God and shaman. This contradiction comes to the front with her
contradictory characteristics.
No one is assigned divine duties in Heogungaegibonpuri. As a sequel to Chasabonpuri, Heogungaegibonpuri is narrated after it. Thus, specific
divinity is not present in Heogungaegibonpuri. Its main purpose is to
explain the meaning of the other world.
