The purpose of this study is the identify the effect of cultural values (familism and filial piety) and
caregiving (caregiving behavior and expectations for caregiving) on the quality of life of the elderly and
the caregiver. To that end, a survey was conducted from January to March, 2014. Caregivers used in the
study were limited to those in their 20s to those in their 50s and those who had least one aged parent.
For the elderly, the subjects used in this study were limited to those aged 65 or older living in local
communities. In the end, a total of 304 copies of the survey from caregivers and 315 copies from the
elderly were used for analysis in this study. The result of the study was as follows: First, compared to
cultural values, direct caregiving explained better the quality of life experienced by the caregiver and the
elderly. Second, the direction of effect on caregiving behavior and caregiving expectations on the quality of
life of the caregiver and the senior citizen were different. That is, in the case of caregivers, the more they
were offering financial care the higher their caregiving stress, but in the case of senior citizens, the higher
their expectations for financial care, the higher were their satisfaction with life and the lower were their
