Filial duty (孝) has been the basis of the value standard of traditional family relationships in our nation
for a long time and has been regarded as a virtue that maintains the most basic parent-child relationship
of human relations. This filial duty broadened its meaning beyond the family relation to loyalty (忠) which
is the virtue of the role of society and the state. The basic ethics of filial duty is family affection,
fraternal love and family love, but has also developed into consideration and love for our neighbors.
Today, not only is our society becoming more and more alienated by materialism, but also the moral
and ethics are gradually disappearing, and parental interest on children is making a difference away from
the traditional concept. In other words, the center of the family is shifting from the parents to the children
due to the reasonable family relationship that aims to educate the child from the perspective of the child
rather than authoritarian education so that the child can live properly after becoming an adult.
The researchers who have a problematic consciousness about the change of values according to these
social fluctuations argue that the existing ethics of filial duty should be reexamined to match the modern
society in response to social change. This is due to the over emphasis on traditional consciousness on filial
duty and its forms which have become a burden to modern people, and this duty has even been
recognized as an inadequate virtue in today 's society.
We have traditionally regarded loving and honoring parents as much as ourselves as ethically beautiful
and good behaviors. The essence of filial duty is not the material but the filial mind to serve the parents,
and like the saying, 'The human's mind makes the world', the mind must be determined first before we set
out to do something. In this way, the filial duty towards the elderly (養老) was the foundation of
benevolence (仁政) for a long time, and if the filial duty towards the elderly is well performed, a bright
society and the development of the nation can be achieved and it has been said that if the nursing homes
are well operated, this can be seen as evidence that the nation is doing well politically.
In conclusion, we should educate ourselves to build a family where children honor and harmonize with
their parents based on the ethics of filial duty, so that our society will not be alienated by materialism and
individualism. Furthermore, we must educate ourselves to give consideration and love to others. Therefore,
it can be said that the education on filial behavior suitable for the modern society will be a key to solving
the social problems of the increase in crimes and juveniles due to the loss of filial behavior.
