For old persons, depression has been one of the most prevalent mental health symptoms. This situation
is equally applicable to the elderly outside the Long-Term Care Insurance (hereafter LTCI). Although
various factors have been known to give rise to geriatric depression, both health-related factors and
family-level social support are expected to influence depression of the old persons outside the LTCI to a
large extent. However depression of the old persons outside the LTCI has never been empirically examined
so far in Korea. Thus this study intends to examine the effect of their sociodemographic characteristics,
health-related factors (subjective and physical health), and family support (family perception, treatment, and
contact) on depression. The results of this study showed that their martial status and subjective health,
respectively, were significant determinants of depression. On the basis of these results, this study presented
some suggestions as well.
