This study sought to clarify necessary home environments and parental attitudes in order to study the status and content of sex education for young chi1dren. Thus, legal guardians of young children were surveyed. The results are summarized as follows: 1) About 90% of the young children had seen scenes of kissing and about 20% had seen sex scenes. 2) A large number of parents (about 70%) agreed with the view that “an atmosphere should be created to allow an open dialogue between parents and children regarding sex whi1e the chi1d is sti11 young." In addition, about 50% of patents agreed with the statement that “It’s important for a child to understand his or her own body, so a child should also be taught the names of the genitals and how they are structured." 3) Many parents had not specifically talked to their children about kissing and sex. They may not have brought the issue up because they felt unable to adequately explain sex to their child. In addition, some were afraid that chi1dren might attempt to use what they had learned about sex and thought it best to explain sexual content when children became aware of it.
