거래를 통한 포크너의 『촌락』 다시 읽기

인간의 탐욕과 이를 이용한 거래의 다양한 에피소드로 구성된 각 단편들이 거래라는 모티브를 통 해 일관성을 이루고 있는 포크너의 후기작인 『촌락』은 사회와 시대의 변화를 고발하는 포크너의 새로운 서술방식으로의 전환을 보여준다. 포크너는 이러한 변화의 중심에서 시대의 속성을 대변하는 인물로 플렘 스놉스를 부상시키고 있다. 이 연구에서는 플렘의 부와 성공이 거래의 과정을 통해서 이 루어지고 있으며, 그 과정과 단계는 매스로우의 계급적 부상과도 일치되고 있음을 살펴보고자 한다. 플렘이 이 촌락에서 성취해가는 지위의 변화는 그를 이용하거나 그와의 거래에서 이익을 추구하려는 촌락의 실력가 거래꾼들과의 거래에서 이루어진다. 촌락으로 들어온 플렘이라는 전입자를 대상으로 한 그들의 거래는 아이러니하게도 플렘에게 부와 성공의 기회를 제공하게 된다. 먼저 헛간방화를 이 용하려던 조디 바너는 플렘에게 안정적인 직장을 제공하게 되었고, 이 촌락의 최고 기득권자이며 대 지주인 윌 바너는 거래를 통해 플렘을 자신의 저택으로 불러들여 지주의 사위라는 신분상승을 허락 한다. 마지막으로 유일한 경쟁자로 예상되던 래트리프와의 거래는 플렘으로 하여금 촌락이라는 좁은 무대를 벗어나 도시로 나아가는 교두보를 마련해준다. 백인중심의 남부농장에서 플렘이 이루어내는 거래의 방식과 그의 성공이 갖는 의미를 분석하면서 이 책을 다시 읽고 이해하는 방법을 시도해보고 자 한다.

영문초록

In this paper, The Hamlet will be analyzed in detail to define the relation between the transactions and Flem Snopes’s success in a small hamlet. This novel consists of 4 books, each of which has plenty of episodes of transactions between Flem and his neighbor traders. Ironically, every step of Flem’s ascending status is also determined by his successful transactions with his neighbor traders who tried to outwit him, because Flem knows and uses human desire and greed very well. His changing status matches the levels of Maslovian hierarchy of needs. The first transaction between Flem and Jody Varner resulted in Flem’s entrance to the hamlet with his new job and office. The second transaction with Will Varner promoted Flem as a member of the landlord's family, providing him with his shelter and land. The last transaction with V. K. Ratliff promised him to be the future banker in Jefferson. Faulkner describes Flem’s success as the example of the Southern proverb, “Trickster tricked” I hope that reading this novel through Flem’s transactions will be an unprecedented way to understand this novel and Faulkner’s changing attitude toward the South and the Southern people.
