행복에 관한 철학적 또는 심리학적 연구에서 종종 발견할 수 있는 현상은 행복개념에 대한 양분화 현상이다. 행복개념에 대한 양분화 현상이란 행복개념을 심리적 개념과 가치평가적 개념으로 양분화 시켜서 이해하려는 현상이다. 이 현상 에 따르면 심리적 개념으로서의 행복은 심적상태를 기술하는 개념인 반면 가치평가 적 개념으로서의 행복은 잘 사는 것 등과 같이 사태의 가치를 평가하기 위해 사용 되는 개념이다. 본 논문에서는 행복개념에 대한 이와 같은 양분화 현상에 반대하여 행복개념은 기본적으로 심리적 개념이면서 동시에 가치평가적 개념임을 보여주고자 한다.
In both the philosophical and psychological studies of happiness do we often find the bifurcation of the concept of happiness: happiness as a psychological concept and happiness as an evaluative concept. According this bifurcation theory, the psychological concept of happiness is concerned with describing psychological states of mind, whereas the evaluative concept of happiness is concerned with evaluating states of affairs as to their positive effect on the quality of life. Against this bifurcation theory of the concept of happiness, I will argue in this paper for a unified theory of the concept of happiness: the concept of happiness simultaneously being a psychological and an evaluative concept.
