The purpose of this study was to develop a list of basic vocabulary of education for students
with developmental disabilities. For this purpose, the following procedures were implemented.
Based on the 10 vocabulary lists developed for the students with disabilities, 2,940 words were
extracted. The extracted words were cross-checked with beginner level words of the existing
vocabulary lists and the preliminary vocabulary list was completed. The preliminary vocabulary
list was divided into six stages according to the frequency of duplication in the analysis
vocabulary list. Next, the preliminary vocabulary list was subjected to expert review and
revised and supplemented. Through this process, the educational vocabulary list for students
with developmental disabilities was developed and categorized into six stages. Then, the
vocabulary were analyzed according to the parts of speech, word type, and semantic domain.
The results of the analysis were as follows. First, the total number of selected vocabulary was
1,000, and it was divided into 6 stages according to the frequency of duplication in the analysis
vocabulary list. The number of vocabulary in each step was 50 in the first step, 100 in the
second step, 300 in the third step, 500 in the fourth step, 800 in the fifth step, and 1,000 in the
sixth step. Second, in the analysis of the part of speech, the ratio of nouns and verbs is was
very high. In the first and second stages, the ratio of nouns and verbs was similar, but in the
later stages, the ratio of nouns gradually increased. According to the analysis of word type, the
ratio of pure-Korean was high in the first and second stages, but the ratio of sino-Korean
gradually increased in the later stage. Lastly, according to the analysis of semantic domain, the
ratio of ‘action’ domain (about 20%) was the highest, followed by ‘education’. Based on these
results, the utilization and improvement of the educational vocabulary list for children with
developmental disabilities were discussed and follow-up research suggested.
