This study explored the married life of the couples with intellectual disabilities through an
in-depth interview and observation. The study investigated their various difficulties through
the married life such as getting married, being pregnant, giving birth, infant caring, married
life and communal life and so on.
Using qualitative research methodology, data was collected and analyzed: purposeful
sampling combined with criteria and convenient sampling were extracted and an in-depth
interview was conducted being made after getting prior consent from the couples. Research
participants were married couples with intellectual disabilities. The period of their married
life was at least over 3 years. They were somewhat able to communicate.
The research results have drawn 65 meaning units, 21 small topics and 7 topics. The research
participants were keeping an ordinary married life such as common daily lives and child rearing
like the couples without intellectual disabilities. The study, however, identified that they were
suffering from rearing children and economic problem due to their disability. On the basis
of these findings, the study suggests how to develop social and psychological services necessary
for married couples with intellectual disabilities and discusses ways to support them.
