This study focuses on the negative aspects of compulsory organizational citizenship behavior that
employees have to perform it caused by acting compulsively or involuntarily from their supervisors or
companies. In order to perform empirical analysis, we surveyed employees who work in Korean companies
and examined the effect of compulsory organizational citizenship behavior on job stress and job burnout.
Furthermore, we also examined the mediating effect of job stress between compulsory organizational
citizenship behavior and job burnout. The analysis showed that compulsory organizational citizenship behavior had a significant effect on job stress and job exhaustion. Job stress also had a significant effect
on job burnout and mediated the relationship between compulsory organizational citizenship behavior and
job burnout. The results of this study suggest that compulsory organizational citizenship behavior in
organizations could lead negative consequences such as job exhaustion and job stress when employee's
perceive compulsions. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the negative influence of the organizational
citizenship behavior in organizations and make an effort to reduce it.
